How It Works

Clean Up Green Up is a free community-wide recycle, repurpose and reuse event organized and hosted by Michigan Green Consortium each year.  It is designed to encourage local residents to divert items which have either further use or which are constructed from materials which can be repurposed from area landfills.

Prepare

Consult and download the event Accepted Item list and the Sitemap.  The Accepted Item list changes from one event to another, so please make certain you have the valid list.  Please familiarize yourselves with items we will not accept. We regret, only specific items will be accepted at the event.  Keep up to date on the latest news by following us on Facebook.

Load

In preparation for unloading at the event, use the Sitemap provided to load your vehicle according to the Stations you will need to visit.  First items placed in the vehicle will be the ones you intend to unload last.  There are Station numbers assigned to each of the participating recycle companies in attendance.

First Come

No appointments are necessary.  It’s First Come First Served.  Simply plan to enter the event between 9am and 3pm to unload your vehicle.  If you have an item for which there are limits on how many we will be able to collect, we advise you plan to arrive early.  Vehicles already in line at 3pm will be serviced.

Support Us

The Clean Up Green Up event is free, but putting on an event of this size is costly!  Your donations to Michigan Green Consortium are appreciated.  Your contributions, which are tax-deductible,  permit us to continue to host these community events and divert difficult-to-recycle items from area landfills.

Common Difficult-to-Recycle Items

We know that many items for which there is a cost to recycle, end up in the trash and go to the landfill.  We also know that many times items for which there are fees to recycle are abandoned in the landscape or buried.  Our goal with this event was to encourage our partner companies to come together once a year, and in one place to accept these items.  If not entirely free of charge, then at significantly reduced rates.

Television & Monitors

Cathode ray tubes in obsolete television and computer monitors contain lead and mercury.  Even some LCD (liquid crystal display) flat screen televisions, used CCFLs, to backlight the display. The CCFL displays contain mercury, making them hazardous to dispose of or incinerate.

Refrigerators & Freezers

Any appliance which once cooled contains Freon, which must be safely evacuated prior to dismantling the unit to salvage the scrap steel and plastic housing materials.  Typical Freon-containing units include refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and dehumidifiers.

Mattresses & Box Springs

Mattresses and box springs contain some materials which can be recycled. Due to their volume, the units take up so much room in the landfill that it is environmentally responsible to dismantle them.

Rubber Tires

Discarded rubber tires pose a significant concern for the environment. Toxins leach into the soil and into the atmosphere, if incinerated. Accidental fires pollute the water, air and soil. Tires left in the landscape become breeding grounds for pests as well, and contribute to the spread of mosquito-borne diseases.

Our Environmental Impact

Michigan Green Consortium, through its flagship Clean Up Green Up event alone, has diverted many thousands of pounds of items from area landfills.  That tonnage includes the following volumes of some of the more common difficult-to-recycle items.

0
Electronics lbs
0
Metals lbs
0
Freon pcs
